The food cozy tutorial

You will find that this project can easily be done in an afternoon.

This really is an easy project to make

You need

1/2 yard quilted material* Buy 3/4 yard if you are nervous about cutting ;-)

*This is to make a basic food cozy like the one pictured, if you want it insulated you will need a few other things i will add those to the bottom of the post


3/8 inch dowel cut into (2) 12 inch pieces

1 package double fold bias tape

Cut material into three pieces.
One piece measuring 14 inches by 24 inches

Two (2) pieces measuring 9 inches by 13 inches







Sew bias tape around three sides of the two 9 x 13 inch pieces. There is NO need to add the bias tape to one of the 9" sides as they will be sewn into the larger piece.




In the larger 14 x 24" piece, cut to half circles from the center at both ends (the 14 inch sides). Yep, I just used a good old bowl from my kitchen to use as my guide





Lay the 9x13 inch pieces on top of the larger piece with the edge having no bias tape even with the long edge of the larger piece....(Flaps WILL overlap)



Pin flaps on.


Now sew bias tape ALL the way around the whole perimeter. When the bias tape hits the long sides you will be using the bias tape to cover BOTH the edge of the 9x13 piece ALONG with the section of the larger piece.







You should now have the MAIN section of your carrier done. EASY right? I hope at least ;-)

Now you need to make 4 loops for the dowels to rest in. This can be done an easy way by simply folding over the top edges and stitching them down about an inch lower....Does that make sense???? Okay this was a crazy part of my week and I dont have pictures...I will try and draw some pictures up tomorrow to add to this, perhaps if you look close enough to some of these pictures you can kind of get an idea of what I am talking about. It's not complicated just a simple fold over for the dowel to rest in...





Add dowels


When you need to wash simply remove the dowels and throw in the washing machine.


**You can make this food cozy and do your own quilting and add your own batting, it makes it a little more substantial, if you use Insul-Bright as your batting it will help keep your food warm or cold.

If you are adding your own batting you will need to double he amount of fabric, you will need a top and bottom piece and the batting in the middle....

I love to make meals for those around me. I enjoy this simple act of service that can be accomplished even with a growing family at home.



This carrier was made for under $5.00 and can easily transport a meal from your house to another. This simple pattern was one of my great grandmother's.

So go raid the piggy bank and lets make this inexpensive project together.

SYTYC audition piece

We were told today we could post our projects on our blog...so here it is. I loved checking out the other projects. You can see them also on SYTYC.

Problem #1: Have you ever had your baby kick off a beautiful baby quilt while in their car seat? Ahh, it's the worst, not to mention if you were unfortunate enough to have your blanket land on a dirty store floor, or the pavement! I have had this happen and it's just plain horrible....I knew I had a problem.....

Problem #2: The dilema of how to keep little baby warm, the cold air would always sneak under blankets and make those little toes all cold.....yet we live where it's not super cold all the time, so I wanted a blanket that could be versatle enough to be used when it gets a little warmer too......
Solution: A car seat blanket, that stays with the car seat. I can't tell you how happy I am that I made this! In the morning when I drive the kids to school I can quickly get my little princess up last, put her in her car seat and snuggle her up to brave the morning chill.
I fold up the top flap (it is designed to tuck under baby and stay snug) then fold over the two other flaps....in the morning's I have her little arms secured under the blanket. When it gets a little warmer the bottom flap can be removed! The best part is that it's really easy to sew, the front can be made as fancy......or as simple as you want. Or of course if you are anything like me, you could have several of these...you know just in case you are feeling a little spunky, or playful, or even simple with just a monogram....Trust me you will want one (or many) for your little one, or to make for someone you know!

Scallop Circle Quilt

I had the youth of our ward (ages 8-11) come over to my house to help me sew this quilt up for Primary Childrens Medical Center.

This was a two fold project, first off I chose to make something for Primary Childrens Medical Center because I spent so much time there as a kid....However I think no matter how sick you are, you sort of forget about it there. I remember so many good times there. We were always doing some sort of craft project or playing games. I had a particular hand drawn game board in my hospital room that had spot's randomly marked off, when ever I said please or thank-you I got a sticker on my chart, when I reached a 'marked' spot I was able to open a present....usually something handmade and donated to the hospital....It was WONDERFUL! I have always wanted to do something for the hospital, but it has sadly always been on my 'to-do' list. Well, I decided now was a great time to get something done. I invited the girls over to help me out, we cut circles and sewed them together, it turned out beautifully!





The quilt was washed after to allow the edges of the scallop circles to ruffle up.


This is the first quilt that I did a patch worked binding, and I loved how it tied everything together, I will definatly be doing that again!


Once it was all completed I added a card to whoever would be recieving the quilt, telling them that I to had spent time there, and that I hoped they would get better soon, and that I hoped they would have as mush 'fun' as I did. I kept the letter short, so that I would not get all emotional to some strange kid that I would never meet ;-)

Hers is this weeks crafty projects. I made a little onsie and shoes for my little neice Jocelyn and the long strips of fabric are for a quilt I am making for Joelys room. And the final two pictures are some of the blocks I have made in a quilting class my mom and I are taking on Wednesday nights, I have to admit last night was very tough to make it through since I still have this yucky flu lingering on. I love the log cabin block and can't wait to sew some more of those, I thought I would hate those blocks because of all the ironing (I hate ironing) but they turned out to be the cutest and funnest to make. I have a lot of sewing to do this week because we are completing the quilt for our class next Wednesday.

Here are my moms and my quilts from the class we took, they turned out so cute. Her's is the cute spring quilt mine looks like fall. We had them machine quilted at the end, which was fun, all thats left is the binding. It makes me want to take another class just looking at them!

Mothers Day quilt

Here is the first quilt I have actually finished and made all on my own (nope I still haven't bound my quilt I made in my class yet) Dont look to close there are plenty of mistakes, but it was fun to make, and I was even able to machine quilt it with my new machine!!! I'm hoping the second picture shows the cool swirlies I can do while machine quilting on the new PFAFF.

I have finally finished my little girl quilt...hmmm kind of thinking I wont get my little boy quilt done in time! I love the machine quilting on the quilt I did like flowers and swirls around the outer border (purple) and really tight squigglies for the white inside of the quilt, I think it turned out fun!

Here's the cute mini scrappy quilt I made for Parlee. I really did trim the edges and bind it I just forgot to take a picture when it was all completed :)
